Marni's Move-N-Music Philosophy
Authentic, integrated, holistic & transformative arts
Authentic: Based on, informed or inspired by specific cultural traditions
(ie. African dance and drum, Afro-Cuban & Brazillian music, yoga, as well as other cultural/arts traditions). Authentic also means that children/youth learn to access authentic aspects of themselves (through increased self-awareness, etc...), as opposed to aspects of themselves influenced by social pressures and media messages.
Integrated: Integration between disciplines - various disciplines are all different routes to access the same essential kernel of learning, and each of the art forms helps to improve skills in the other art forms. Using all the disciplines to teach in an integrated fashion helps children unlock creative energy in a playful way.
Ie. 'physical acting' is informed by an understanding of body postures, movement and dance - 'becoming animals' through animal yoga postures is essentially physical acting - and a form of play.
Holistic: Activities incorporate, access and take into account students minds, bodies and emotions (or spirit). Activities also help to teach children/youth how to take into account and to respect each others' minds, bodies and emotions (or spirit). Activities help to teach children how to understand their 'voice' (which is connected to the breath) as a conduit for speech, song, rhythm, communication, emotional and creative expression - as well as tool for personal empowerment.
Transformative: Learning yoga and arts in a rooted, integrated and holistic way helps to develop intrapersonal and interpersonal intelligence. There are many individual health benefits which include: increased concentration, ability to focus and learn, increased self-confidence, self-esteem, self-awareness; as well as improved flexibility and functioning of body systems. There are also collective health benefits to learning arts and holistic arts. Learning in groups provides the opportunity to improve skills in cooperation, listening/empathy, awareness of others, ecological awareness, teamwork. Practicing yoga and holistic arts creates positive transformation within children/youth; the transformation can ripple outwards to positively impact relationships amongst children/youth; as well as between children/youth and their ecological environments.
